This was fun and difficult. I didn’t order the tracks in any way. I did have well written and detailed descriptions of each song, but it got erased… so now there are poorly written blurbs about each song rampant with grammatical and spelling errors. Enjoy.

- TV on the Radio - Staring at the Sun (2004)
this song was important to me because it was at a time when I was listening to a ton of hip hop and ignoring a lot of other genres. these guys deserve every single shred of popularity they gained.
- The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps (2003)
I cant really pin down what I was up to around the time this song came out, but it resonated with me greatly.
My favorite song from my favorite album of 2009
- Menomena - Muscle ‘n Flo (2007)
the raw production and heavy percussion on this tracks is what does it for me. the album that this song is from is called Friend and Foe
- Lil Wayne - Famous (2006)
A lot of times, true lil wayne fans have to defend their fandom. this is proven very difficult when it comes to choosing one song to play for someone, because he made 15 records (5 studio albums and 10 mixtapes) this decade.
- Smog - Dress Sexy At My Funeral (2000)
This guy has such a haunting voice. This song is really funny and infectious.
- Why? - These Few Presidents (2008)
“even though I haven’t seen you in years, yours is a funeral I’d fly to from anywhere” line of the decade
- Sage Francis - Dance Monkey (2005)
Sage Francis is a ridiculous lyricist and an interesting and complicated character. His long music career is heavily layered in style and uniqueness.
- Emily Haines and The Soft Skeleton - Doctor Blind (2006)
My favorite female musician. I could have chosen any one song off of her album Knives Don’t Have Your Back.
- Simian Mobile Disco - Hustler (2007)
what the fuck is you gonna do about it - NOTHIN.
- Doomtree - Drumsticks (2009)
if there were ever to be another Wu-Tang - this group is them, indisputably the best hip hop collective in the country right now 5 rappers and 4 producers and every single one of them is equally bursting with talent. one happens to be a drop dead gorgeous woman.
- J Dilla - Last Donut of the Night (2006)
J Dilla made this song from his death bed. before that, he produced a very large percentage of the hip hop record I listened to in the 90’s. I didn’t know who he was then but I do now.
- Buck 65 - Blood of a Young Wolf (2005)
the lyrics of this seem to paint a vivid picture of something, somewhere or someone.
- Kings of Leon - Joes Head (2003)
At the time I got the record with this song I was not listening to anything else remotely similar, however it somehow managed to fit right in and got a ton of rotation.
- Regina Spektor - Pavlov’s Daughter (2001)
The table drumming. Her schizophrenic voice. The feeling that she knows everything about you.
- Hawksley Workman - Jealous Of Your Cigarette (2001)
first of all, i probably am, secondly the guitar solo is so simple but right after when the come in with the chorus repeating jealous over and over… sold.
- James Blunt - Goodbye My Lover (2005)
this is simultaneously the saddest and funniest song of all time.
- The Streets - Lets Push Things Forward (2002)
I love this and I was listening to it during a very fun time in my life. I also think this guy was ahead of his time.
- Madvillially (MF Doom and Madlib) - Figaro
There is no rapper dead or alive that can do with words what MF Doom can do. It take a while to learn his language but once youve invested hes rapping about the simplest things in stream of rap consciousness: ”A whole host of roller coaster riders / Not enough tracks (is it?) / Hot enuff black (for ya) / It’s too hot to handle, you got blue sandals / Who shot ya? Ooh got you new spots to vandal? / do not stand still, both show skills / Close but no crills, toast for po’ ills, post no bills / Coast to coast Joe Shmoes flows ill, go chill / Not supposed to overdose, no Doz pills”
- Jens Lekman - And I Remember Every Kiss (2007)
This sounds like a black and white movie.
